Detection of Salmonella spp.
Detection of Salmonella spp.
Salmonella is a foodborne pathogenic bacterium that can cause severe illness in infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Most infections in humans result from eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water. Sources of Salmonella infections include foods of animal origin, dairy products, pet food, fresh produce, and foods contaminated during processing. The fast and accurate detection in raw materials and finished products is crucial to protect consumers and to minimize risk and costs for food industry. That requires rapid, efficient, and validated methods. The following microbiological tests are carried out in our laboratory:
-
- Detection of Salmonella spp. (Real time PCR system);
- Detection of Salmonella spp. (Real time PCR system, using PREraser supplement);
- Detection of Salmonella spp. (PCR by BAX method).
The scope of these methods includes pathogens detection in foodstuffs, feed, and environmental samples. The results of the performed analyses are presented on the next day* (if samples arrive before 3 p.m.) at: approximately 1 – 2 p.m., when the Real time PCR system method is used; ~3 p.m. - Real time PCR system, using PREraser supplement; ~5 p.m. - PCR by BAX method.
Real time PCR system and Real time PCR system, using PREraser supplement are faster and more flexible in time than PCR by BAX method. Real time PCR system, using PREraser supplement is the only method which eliminates dead Salmonella DNA, so there are less wrong positive answers. All these methods are designed for faster detection and identification of Salmonella spp. than conventional methods.
